DEBATING

Good evening Chairperson, Ladies and Gentlemen,

This year Grammar debaters have proven once again that they are indeed a formidable force on the debating floor. Each team has been highly successful, with eleven out of fourteen teams arguing their way to the final rounds of the QDU competition. Teams which should be congratulated for making it to the finals are Year 8(I), (3) and (4), Year 9(I) and (3), Year 10 (2) and (3), Year 11 (1) and (2), Year 12 and Senior A. Because these finals were knock-out rounds, teams were faced with fierce competition. However, these challenges did not easily daunt the debaters. In particular, three teams performed well. The Year 8(4) team consisting of Judith Castillo, Katherine Flood, Kate Hawkins, Elizabeth Paratz and Holly Pym reached the Quarter Finals, while the Year 12 team consisting of Allira Power, Susan Malone, Stephanie Fielding, Nicole Martin and Emma de Tassanyi and the Senior A team consisting of Ellie O'Gorman, Julie MCKay, Am anda Rowell, Marie Meek and Jacqueline Mantle progressed through to the Grand Final stage to debate against teams from Marist Brothers College, Ashgrove and St Joseph's, Gregory Terrace with the Year 12 team ultimately victorious. It is not often that so many teams from one school make it through to such high levels of the competition, and such achievements are truly a reflection of the depth of Grammar debating Cinebuffs Club members meet regularly to critical Iy view and discuss selected screen offerings. With the millennium in mind, programs this year have concentrated on formative stages and technologies in screen production. Our next project is a competition for an official Cinebuffs logo. The logo will illustrate the many elements of screen design in Term Four, members met the new Casablanca digital editor. Its ease of use should result in some highly creative video production! Many girls this year also trial led for the QDU State Debating Team. Out of these participants two girls from Grammar, Caitlin Goss and Jacqueline Mantle, were selected in a twelve member squad to train for final team selection. Over a series of weeks these two girls underwent numerous short preparation debates and seminars and finally it was announced that Caitlin Goss was selected as first reserve for this team. This is a great achievement and Caitlin should be congratulated for her selection. Red Cross debating also continued strongly this year with twojunior teams entering the competition. One of these teams consisting of Tess O'Gorman, Deborah Tan, An shini Jain, Ajice Walker and Kathleen MCBryde made it through to the quarter finals. While these girls unfortunately were defeated in the initial round, their efforts are to be coinmended Debating could not have been so successful this year without the work and dedication of the team coaches. Special thanks must go to Miss Williams for co-ordinating debating this year and also to the many teaching staff who provided much valuable support for the teams. The success experienced by Grammar debating this year was evident throughout the Junior, Senior and Red Cross competitions. Indeed the strength of Grammar debating continues to grow each year.
