Program and staff have used it to address ideas in curriculum development. Thanks must go to Mrs Katrina Wain and Mr Alan Allinson who joined the FPS teams for their early morning mental gymnastics on Wednesdays, and continued thanks to Mrs Lin Fairlie who has shared her interest and enthusiasm with us. ANNE STUBBINGTON

As well as being a competition, FPS also has a great deal to offer in the classroom, and the program has been successfully adapted to our Science curriculum, and most recently in the Yea r Eleven Economics class . It encourages teamwork and co- operation, develops research and critical thinking skills and motivates students to become independent learners . It has also been used as part of our School Professional Development

Tournatnent ofMinds

T ournament of Minds is a great activity for students interested in a challenge, who are creative and lateral thinkers, and extrovert enough to be able to put it all together in a drama presentation. It is a six week long competition where stu lents work in teams of seven, comprising at least two year groups, to solve a problem from one of three categories: Language and Literature, Social Science, and Maths and Engi- nee ring. On the day of the competition the teams must present their skit, which dramatises their solution to the long-term problem, as well as engage in a fast thinking short term problem which they have to respond to on the spot. Last year, Brisbane Girls Grammar won two categories at the R gional competition. These teams went on to compete in the Language and Literature , and Social Science categories of the Stale Finals held at Queensland University. They had to tackle an unseen problem in three hours. Final presentations were

impressive but not good enough to win on the day. However, it was great fun and a valuable experience . The 1997 season opened with a great deal of enthusiasm and enough students to make four teams: two for Social Science and one in each of the other categbries. The Regional Finals were held on 24th August and all teams performed ve1y well. Social Science Team 1 received a "Spirit of Tournament" award for creativity and co-operation. Members were: Emma McKeon, Alanna Conway, Chris-Anne Aroney, Jacqueline Mantle, Victo- ria Ling, Anna Clouston and Joanna Henderson. We would like to thank Mr & Mrs Just who gave up their Sunday to judge teams at Regional Finals, Mrs Ryder for her support and facilitating, Mrs Stubbington for her constant help and support, and Zoe Hildebrand for facilitating.
