Building Bridges -with BGS

D uring Term Three each of the Year Eight classes was involved in a collaborative activity with a Year Eight class from BGS. The project involved teams of five or six students working cooperatively to plan and build a model bridge, according to specifications given in the "Bridge Building Code". The aim of the project was to build the most effective bridge as judged by the weight that it could hold before collapsing. The ac tivities

were grounded in the curriculum through the Maths depart- ments of each school. The Maths teachers had planned differ- ent "lead in" activi- ties so that when the students came to- gether they brought different knowledge and experiences to the activity. This knowledge was then

while providing an opportunity to experience a learning programme that required them to use a range of interdiscipli- naty skills and thinking processes for an extended period of time . As the photos show, a great time was had by all and feedback from both schools indicated that this project was both challenging and enjoyable. As -one student said: Ifeel that it has improved our engineering skills a great deal. This experiment was a very enjoyable activity and we have learnt to work well as a group. I sincerely hope we can have more activities like this one in the future as the company ofstudents from the other school was a very enjoyable experience.

He then challenged the bridge builders to plan and build the bridge. The project was designed to build on the positive social interactions the students had experienced in the primary school
