A Breath of Fresh Air
T he libra1y staff of Girls Grammar understand that one important way students are prepared for the future is by their ability to use information purposefully. To this end, a library collection has existed in the school from the time Miss Beanland was Headmistress in the 1880s. Much has changed since 1888 when it was recorded that the libra1y was housed in a "corner of the upstairs corridor". In 1902 there were 382 books in the libra1y. Today students have access to over 40 000 volumes, 100 periodicals, 7000 audio visual resources, CD ROMs, 5 daily newspapers, a collection of artefacts, and access to global information sources via the internet.
Two developments have greatly improved the library envi - ronment in 1997: air conditioning and enhanced intran t facilities. The air conditioning, generously provided by the Parents and Friends' Association has made the libra1y a much more congenial place in which to study. The students have greatl y appreciated working in even more comfortable surroundings. The maste1y of information management skills is enhanced when the conditions are so conducive to success.
