SINGAPORE - MAIAYSIA CONSERVATORIUM TOUR
T here we were - after eight long months of Sunday rehearsals and seven and a half hours of plane travel! As the fifty-six band members and the seven administrative staff approached the doors of the air-conditioned airport, we were officially greeted by the Sembawang Wind Orchestra members and thirty-six degree heat. As our baggage and instruments were loaded into the trucks, the Queensland Symphonic Winds were trans- ferred to the NACLI premises, where we were lo be hosted by the Sembawang members. The following days were to be filled with touring leading musical schools, rehearsals, performances, shopping, more shopping, and finding the coolest piece of clothing to wear. ingapore was a shopper's paradise, catering, of course, for the eager tourist.
srnveyed the markets of China Town. Barter- ing at these markets was a quickly acquired skill as all prices were subject to negotiation! On the following day, we visited other tourist destinations in Malaysia and discovered large shopping complexes . Complete with McDonald's and KFC, these were a lot of fun, as was the game of Russian Roulette played by those attempting to cross the main street, which was known by those on tour as 'the land of the quick and the dead'! Back in Singapore, we performed on the floating stage at Sentosa Island - a giant fun park. We also rode the cable cars in a tropical storm. When one is seventy metres above the main highway in a metal box hanging from one cable, in unbelievably high winds, one tends to panic a little and want to alight. This was, however, not to be as one of my friends

On the fifth day of the tour, we embarked on a countty-side tour of Malaysia. After climbing 271 stairs to view huge caves and an ancient temple, our bassoon player was bitten by a monkey and rushed to hospital! She srnvived this close encoun- ter only to be hit by a truck later on that day in Kuala Lumpur. Never-the-less, she returned home none-the-worse for her adventures. In Malaysia , we stayed in the very flash Palace Hotel and were treated as VIP's by the hotel staff. That evening, we
accidentally pushed the emergency stop button and suspended the entire cable car network for a further twenty minutes. On Sunday 17th August, we performed at Victoria Concert Hall for a sell-out audience and the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore - the concert we had been preparing for eight months. That performance was the most memorable of my musical career. After two encores , many autographs and photo- shoots, QSW headed back to the youth centre .
