1 995 saw the second year of I Beanland. and what a year it was. From the swimming to the drama, the choir to the debating, the gym to the athletics, Beanland certainly made an impact. At lead- ership camp late in 1994, the sen- iors of Beanland decided that our goal for the incoming year was to create a unified, spirited and fun Beanland, the type of house that partrcipates in everythin g, regard- less of win or loss, has fun and walks away contented. The introduction of the Year Eights brought fresh blood to Beanland and we greeted the nerv- ous little things with excitement (although most were taller than the Year Twelves!) and looked forward to them becoming true Beanlanders. The Interhouse Swimming held in early March was fantastic as Beanland's excellent spirit and attr- tudes gave way to a fantastic day. There was nonstop laughter to be heard from the Beanland stand. After months of organised re- hearsals and the additional pre- exam stress, Bena and Frankie were joyous that the whole thing was over. The lull in House activiry was shortlivedas the Interhouse Choir, conducted by Stephanie Dee and Eleanor Leslie, was on the horizon. After endless de- bate, the House decided on the legendary Don McClean's "Vin- cent". After the performance, Beanland once again justified its nickname of "the house that makes you cry". The mournful tune and beautiful choral work justice. Special thanks must be musical talents and presence at

easier for Steph and Eleanor. The first semester of 1995, almost over, or so we thought, had one last surprise in store for Beanland - the Gymnastics. Led by our flexible leo- tard wonders, Kendall Salzman and Lucinda Cater, Beanlanders jumped, bent, danced and lunged their way to win the Artistic competition. to come seventh in the Rhythmic and gain the most points overall. Thanks to an extensive number of willing volunteers, Beanland was excellently represented in all areas. Personal bests andage champions had, at this stage, become commonplace in Beanland house groups. After a much needed holiday, Beanland members came back re- freshed andeager to tackle whatever term three threw at them. Debating, the pursuit of the intellectual, or as it is defined by the houses at BGGS, a good excuse for the unknowing to argue agatnst other houses, was to be held in the second week of term. the team to beat the Hirschfeldians in the first round. The te^m, consisting of Emily Moody-Nobbs, Kate Byth-Lowden and Cara Dumas, went on to the semi-finals to be narrowly beaten by the Lilley frogs. However, not discouraged, Beanland began their other Interhouse competitions with a passion, From Year Eight netball to Year Twelve basketball the list of fun competitions

The Drarna, captained by Frankie Mason and Bena Riddle, was truly a sight to behold. "Down Together", an original play based around war was moving, expressive and unifying for Beanland. The excellent performance, which brought tears to the eyes, won Beanland first place and Frankie and Bena big smiles. It was a trophy well deserved by the now baldingDrama captains.

was endless; and Beanland played with the best attitude, one of fun and friendship. All these physical competitions, however, seemed only a pre- cursor to 17 August, Judge- ment Day, the Interhouse Ath- letics. The competition, held for the first time at Churchie, did not inhibit Beanland's tal- ent as we went on to gain second place, despite the ex- tensive injuries sustained by our competitors.
