During the week from Monday, 30th August 10 Friday, 3rd September, this window opened and forty-nine students from 8F and 8H plus several staff "trainers" embarked on a week at the "Antarctic Expeditioners' Training Camp". The week began with an Antarctic immersion. Through video and music the girls experienced the pristine beauty of this special continent and then proceeded to a physical acclimati- sation with lots of ice cold water and shivering. The trainers were well prepared with appropriate clothing but it was fasci- nanng 10 see shivering girls using penguin techniques to con- serve body heat

base to prepare them for the program later in the week. These included the Penguin Dive of Distinction, Creating Antarctic Landscapes, Whiter than White, How big is Antarctica? Tourism, A Continent in Peril, and Your Mine By Wednesday the girls had been placed into one of the fol- lowing special interest role groups: environmentalists, scien- lists, docu-journalists, fishing, mining, and tourism interests, world forum respresentatives - and penguins

At the training centre they were greeted by Ms Penny Gum, "Director" of the camp, who welcomed the expeditioners and presented each girl with her training handbook The scene was I'Gally set when the group received a fax direct from lake Jacobsen, leader of Davis Base.
