OBITUARY Mrs Margaret Cribb With the death of Mrs Margaret Bridson Cribb, AM, on August 12 this year, Queensland lost not only an outstanding academic and astute political analyst, but also a great humanitarian. For more than 40 years, she and her husband, retired University of Queensland Deputy Chancellor Mr TVor Cribb. inspired colleagues and students to strive always for standards of excellence Born in Rockhampton in 1924, Margaret Cribb completed her secondary school studies at Brisbane Girls' Grammar Schoolin 1941, before commencing an Arts Degree Course at the University of Queensland in 1944 That same year she entered \\,'omen's College, which marked the beginning of a long and productive association that saw her President of the Women's College Old Collegians' Association 1973-1985, a member of the Women's College Council andits President 1978-1982 and 1984-1985 While studying for her Arts Degree, Margaret Cribb began her legendary, involvement with University extra-curricular activities. Dr Freda Bage, University Senate member from 1923-1950, and Principal of Women's College, described Margaret Cribb in a reference as having "the most brilliant extra-curricular career" of any student in college Her agile mind, scholarship and ability 10 communicate were instrumental in ensuring the success of her diverse coin- initmenis: member of the Women's College Students' Committee, the University's Student Union Council, the Arts Students' Society in 1946 she became editor of both the National Union of Australian University Students' Newspaper Student News, and the first female editor of Semper F10reai. University of Queensland's publication The Union President at that time was Ivor Cribb. her future husband Maroaret Cribb's skills in journalism led her to becoming part-owner, writer and manager for the South Coast Express She graduated B. A. with first class honours in 1965, and immediately began a Master's Degree in Arts which she obtained before accepting a position as lecturer in Political Science in 1972. She became Senior Lecturer in 1975 and reader 10 Years later. The author of many publications Margaret Cribb was a member of the State Library Board from 1978 and its Deputy Chairman in 1984. Her interests embraced all aspects of community life, nursing, national railway administration, trade union training as well as College affairs and industrial relations, her major field of study After retiring from the University in 1987 Margaret Cribb served as an Executive Consultant to the Kennedy Commission of Review into Corrective Service (1988), and in 1990 conducted an independent review of the National Party of Australia (Qld branch) Her considerable contribution to education and women's affairs was recognised by the award Member of Order of

Australia in 1992. Her husband received a similar honour in 1983 for services 10 education. Mrs Maruaret Cribb is survived by her husband, her son Bridson, and lier daughter Anna Lee '.\;$4;^';"*^*411**'-. - -;, 4, .,,-... *
