1993 School Magazine

WOOLCOCK in 1993 Woolcock has again demonstrated the unity, enthusi- asm and vitality for which it is renowned. The "Woolcock Warriors" have shown just how much exuberance and talent it takes to have Woolcock Power. The year kicked off to a fan- lastic start at the combined House BBQ and Miss Woolcock pageant. A brilliant time was had by all and congratulations must go to Rosemary Henzell (Yr 9) who was named "Miss Woolcock 1993" by our judges. Her name, along with last year's winner, Beth Williams, has been inscribed on the Miss Woolcock Shield, a new addition to the house noticeboard. The AMANl group's PI Days that raised funds for Am nest International were enthusiastically supported by Woolcock members. Woolcock girls strutted their stuff in everything from boxers to nannies and ug-boots. Woolcock swam and barracked like the Warriors we are at the Interhouse Swimming Carnival in February. After triumphing in the individual events by winning the Lt. Col. Plant Challenge Cup, we came third in the relays and picked up second place overall. Both Clarissa Ienkins (Yr 10) and Jackie Griffiths (Yr 12) placed second in their age groups while Kirsten Griffiths (Yr 8), Necia Bemays (Yr 8), Connne Butler (Yr 9), loanna Starkey (Yr 10), Sarah Peel (Yr 11), Alex Tucker (Yr 11) and EstherIenkins (Yr 12) must be con- graiulaied on their individual successes. Congratulations how- ever must go to A1ison MCLean (Yr 9) who not only won the 14yrs Individual Age Championship but was also named School Swimming Champion. Jackie Griffiths (Yr 12) proved her supremacy in the Open 50m Freestyle Championship, placing first. The budding actors in our 43-strong cast and crew performed brilliantly in the Interhouse Di'am a Competition in a produc- lion of "Just Equal" by Dennis Bells. The adjudicator Ms Sue Benner awarded us a second placing with a Highly Coinmended. The play was adapted and directed by Katherine Henzell and a special mention must go to Megan Scott whose efficiency and resilience as a stage manager proved vital to the play's success. in the interhouse Gymnastic Competition Woolcock boasted first places in the Rhythmic Hoop and Ribbon and second places in Clubs and Rope with Woolcock dominating the Rhythmic Competition overall. in the Artistic Competition Laui'a Wessling placed third on bars while Fiona Woolcock and Zoe Beer claimed first on vault. Woolcock gained second placing ovei'all in this event and thanks must go to our Rhythmic Captains, SIacey Frostick and Kym Potter, and Allisiic Captain, Laura Wessling. Tile Interhouse Choral Competition was yet another forum whei'e Woolcockians displayed their versatility of talent. We placed second overall with our rendition of Michael Jackson's "Heal 111e World" and our adjudicated "excellent" perfor- mance was due to the hard work of MIChelle Thrupp and Caroline Pearson. Our debaters: Sarah-Jane SI Clair (Yr 10), Katherine Khafagi (Yr 8), and Kerne Godden (Yr 11), under the direction of Zoe Bennett and Ienny Gwynne debated skil- fully against Gibson but were defeated, The Woolcock Athletics team was truly a force to be reck- oned with at ANZ Stadium. 11 was yet another event for all those "Woolcocky People" 10 strut out in style in their yellow tights, flares and dresses and set the pace on both the track and field. We proved our dominance in the individual events

but the aggregate house points that set us at second place did not reflect the dynamic way in which Woolcock cheered and competed. Woolcock's incredible year can be accredited 10 many peo Ie. Thanks must go our House Sports Captains, Kathryn SIoane and Anne SUIlivan, for all their hard work and dedication, and to our exceptional House Vice-Captain, SIacey Frostick, for all her enthusiasm and creativity. Thanks also must go to Miss Derrington, our Head of House, whose organisation and direction have been invaluable to the year's success, as well as the other Woolcock staff. The Grade Twelves have been remarkable in their dynamic leadership and I would like to thank them all very much for their creativity and unfailing dedication 10 the House this year. I would also like to extend my thanks to the whole of Woolcock House whose reputation for enthusiasm and sporting excellence continues because of their magnificent energy and house spirit. We wish next year s Grade Twelves every success in continuing the Woolcock tradition in the future. Katherine Henzell, House Captain
