Cast irons had the potential to replace curient liner materi- als, substantially increasing liner lives, she said Alex attended BCGS from 1982 to 1986 and was a Prefect in her final year
Iennifei' said young women should widen their career choices and not be discouraged by the stereotypical view of engineering as a 'man's' profession. Dui. ino her five years at B. G. CS. , Jennifer was involved in a wide variety of sports and CLIltural activities ranging from Karate to Music and Debating. She was a boarder f^om 1977 until part way through her senior year. After aaining liei' Senior Certificate in 1981 she studied Engineei'ing at the University of Queensland.
ARABELLE CLAYDEN
Brisbane Girls' Grammar School lakes pride in the success of foimer student A1'abelle Clayden, who Iecently won the international Award in the pre-docioi'al category of dental research After completing lier Yeai' 12 studies in 1986, A1'abelle entered the Faculty of DentistI. y at the University of Queensland. "One of tile things I most reinenTbei' about BCGS, " she said, "was the encoui'agement we were given to participate in co-cull'icular activities. I was always interested in the Biological Sciences but I I'Gaily enjoyed the OPPoi'Iunity to play in the Orchestra and Concert Band. As a flautist I won the Woodwind PI'ize in 1986 and I hope, when time permits, to take Lip my music again Aftei completing three years of the Dental Course Arabelle elected to take one year off and pursue dental research in the area of Oral Biology "My particular area was the effect of growllT hormone on tooth formation, " she said As a result of these studies, Arabelle entered lier I. eseai. ch in the Allstralia/New Zealand Division of the worldwide (International Association Dental Research) competition, and was awarded the 1991 Colgate Prize, whicli lionoured heI' as the Australia/New Zealand I'GPi'esentaiive at International level in Glasgow this yeai'. 11 was there she received the highest arcolade: 111e Edward Halton Award for Junior InvestIgaiors in Dental Research "I haven'I quite Inade up niy ntind exactly what 1'11 do wlien I complete my degree this year, " said Arabel!e, "but it was veiy stimulating being in Glasgow, and I shall prob- ably explore further areas in dental researcli. " Arabelle's award was based on "scientific content and value of research, demonstrated mastei'y of subject by a postei' and verbal presentation. " ,,

Alex Knotsoukos heal treating fracture toughness bars in a box furnace in the University's heal treatment laboratory
University of Queensland PhD student Alexandra Kootsookos is one of only a nandful of lesearchers in tile world working with special air-hai'dening metal alloys 10 improve equipment life in the minerals industry Alex, 23. is improving fundamental scientific understand- ing of toughness of white cast irons and varying heat treatments to change the microstructure of these materials She said one application for the wear-resistant matei'Ials was for grinding metal liners in mineral ci'ushing and grinding operations. The air-hai'dening steels are similar in composition to traditional while iron, but with several "adaptations". Alex, of the University's Mining Metallurgical Engineering Department, has won a prestigious 1992 AUSii'alian Postgraduate Research Award - Industry. Alex's three year project, in conjunction with industrial partner Mount Is a Mines Ltd, involves a combination of laboratory research including electi'on microscopy studies, work with commercial foundries and industrial trials of the new materials. "The project uses alloys with a unique balance of proper- ties enabling them to resist abrasion and wear and yet not be brittle, " she said. "At field trials in Mount Is a we have examined mills with the new alloy liners and our view is that they improved wear life by 80 percent. "
