CARNARVON GORGE - REEF SAFARI On the cold July morning of Saturday 16th, twenty-five intrepid Girls' Grammar students boarded a Mt Gravatt bus and set off on the Gorge-Reef Safari. For that one week, while the rest of Brisbane slept in warm beds with sheets and blankets and ate luxurious dinners with proper cutlery, the Gorge-Reefers were on safari in Central Queensland The first action-packed day took Lis on a ten hour bus trip due west then due north to Camarvon Gorge with stimulating commentary from John and Dave, our fearless bus drivers We pitched our tentsin the wilderness along with 200 other intrepid explorers. For the next two days we trekked all over Camarvon Gorge froin the Cathedral Caves to the waterfall and the Moss Gardens and from the Amphitheatre to the Bluff. We finished each day willI sore feet and a full camera. After icy showers we defrosted ourselves and went spotlighting. The native "wildlife" appeared to be mainly nocttiral and they flocked to our fire in great numbers, especially the Nudgee Hairy-Legged Bilby

We whizzed through Emerald the following day and fossicked for the afternoon at Rubyvale gemfields before returning to our Big Rooster at Emerald. We passed cotton fields and more cottoiT fields and more cotton fields on the way to Rocky. That night we visited the Koorana Crocodile Farin where we ate the best meal we had had all week and took photos of bloody-toothed crocodiles ... froiti behind a big fence Thursday saw us reef-cruising ai'ound Great Keppel Island where the brave-hearted and the thick-skinned snorkelled and boom-netted in the freezing water. We spent F1'Iday night in Bundaberg where we viewed the Bundaberg Ruin Distillery from a safe distance before embarking on the six hour trip from Bundaberg to Brisbane. We then staggered home to a hot shower and a warm bed
