COMMUNITYINVOLVEMENT
,
CHALLENGE IN CHILE They talk about "facing the challenge" but wlio would have thought that the challenges I would encounter on an Operation Raleigh expedition to Chile would include such extremes as having to dig a snow hole to shelter overnight from a blizzai'd. or learning to di'ive all ox-calt in a tiny village straight out of a wild-west movie Operation Raleigh is an organisation that selects young people from all walks of life and sends them to various parts of the world where they work in small teams o11 special projects. These include community work. or assisting in scientific reseai. ch. and usually involve some element of adventure as well. Besides helpino the areas they work in. young people have the chance to open the 11' minds to the rest of the world. and are stimulated to become more involved in the problems of the 11' own community I left London with Operation Raleigh mid-January and found myselfin steamy Santiago, capital of Chile. Next we spent forty-eight hours travelling south by bus and boat to Coyhaigue where Operation Raleigh had set up headquarters. We were further south than Stuart Island,
New Zealand. and ill the second 1110st soutliern of the twelve Chilean regions. After a fewdays orbriefiiTg we wei'e sent to a tiny village of about a nundred wood shingle houses Niregtiao itself was established dunno the time the counti'y was under military rule - the Pinochet years - because it was so close to the Argentinean border.
