1989 School Magazine

SWIMMING The 1989 Swimming season officially began on 23rd January. During this final week of the school holidays many enthusiastic swimmers arrived at the school pool to begin the hard grind of training. The beginning of school saw an increase in the squad and the Crade Eight time trials on Orientation Day saw a promising influx of new talent. ln the second week of training the squad was introduced to our new coach, Scott Richardson, who taught us the true meaning of "Quality not Quantity". Training was held five times a week and this swimming program was enhanced by a run, which added an enjoyable new dimension to squad sessions. Saturday morning trainings were also held which gave the private coach swimmers an opportunity to train with the squad. On Friday nights preceding the Q.C.S.S.S.A. competition, the squad attended time trial Carnivals against other schools. These provided the squad with strong competition, a continual improvement in times and a tremendous build up of team spirit as we proved ourselves a force to be reckoned with.

Team spirit was also developed during the build up to the "big" day as we held a team breakfast, supplemented with many inspirational talks, hardy good lucks and shall we say a few pikelets! The Crade Eights were eventually supplied with their team shirts and the night before the major competition the team held a "Psych" session which included final relay change overs and an inspirational movie. The weeks had flown by and March -l t had arrived. All team members displayed a high level of determination and many recorded personal bests. Our enthusiasm and personal commitment to training had paid off. Tension was mounting as the final presentation ceremony began and the results were eventually announced. The team finished fourth on 325 points, a mere 16 points behind Somerville House and State High who tied for second on 34'l . St Peter's were the victors of the day with 4'l 1 points.
