1985 School Magazine
Congratulations must also go to those who gained places in the vocal and instrumental competitions held in fourth term. It was evident from the high standard of all who participated that there is considerable musical talent present in the school. On behalf of everyone in all groups, large and small , we would like to thank all the teachers for their dedicated and patient work, and to those continuing on- good luck and STAY CRAZY!

MUSIC CAPTAINS' REPORT 1985 saw the arrival of several new members of staff to the Music Department, namely Mrs Pederson, the new Director of Music, Miss Cook and Mrs Ritter (our part-time flute teacher). We also welcomed music specialists: Mr Selby (brass) , Mr Carlan (horn) , Mr Cowgill (saxaphone) , Mr Clark (percussion) , and Mrs Braz ier (vocal). The first event on the musical calendar was the highly successful first term concert at which a variety of groups performed - the second term concert was equally successful , with a wide range of music being presented by the various groups. Between the 8th and 10th of june, Alexandra Headlands was again taken by storm when the Annual Combined Music Camp took place on the Uniting Church area, and in the Life Saving Building opposite. Evacuation of the area was quickly realised as the multitudes began their 16-odd-hours of rehearsals. Our very special thanks must go to the dedicated experts who gave up their time to brave a day of madness: Mr Andrews who took combined orchestra, Mr Middleton who returned to the combined concert band, and Dr Wales, who not only took it on himself to control the entire camp in combined choir, but also gave some invaluable hints to La Capella. The purpose of the camp, however, has never been solely to rehearse music, hour after hour, though its emphasis is naturally in this area. Everyone who went would agree it also provided a relaxed atmosphere for an unforgettable social experience. On the night of our arrival , a huge barn- dancing session succeeded in breaking the ice between the girls and the (shock and horror?!) boys. Saturday night's 60's dance was very successful, including its limbo dancing competition to see how "laid-back" we could be. "Give My Regards to Broadstreet" was the video watched on Sunday night, before the whirl of activity on Monday as everyone helped return the camp to its former self! This year many girls from Grammar entered in different sections of the Pine River's Secondary Schools' Music Contest. The Senior C!hoir, String Ensemble, and Clarinet Choir gained 1st prizes in their respective sections, along with the Flute Choir which gained a 2nd place. Some individual students were also successful in the Pine Rivers Contest. Many thanks to all the students and teachers involved. We look forward to next year's participation. We were delighted to hear that Ia Capella was accepted for the "Young Artist Concert" series run by the Brisbane City Council. 62 . At the Music Camp Concert, the audience filling the Centenary Hall at B.G.S. heard the results of the two days.
STRING ORCHESTRA The String Orchestra welcomed many new members this year and as well as growing in numbers, we are also growing in experience. We have performed at all school concerts this year and have provided accompaniment for one of Sarah Curtis' solo performances on the clarinet.
We thank Miss Myers for being our enthusiastic and dedicated conductor.

SAXOPHONE SEXTET 1985 has seen the launching of an exciting new group in the Music Department. A Saxophone Sextet has been formed, consisting of three Altos, two Tenors, and a Baritone Saxophone. Since it has begun, we have tackled music ranging from chamber music to jazz. Our first performance was at the B.G .G.S. Prom Concert, and we hope to have many more such successes. We feel that the formation of this group has been of great benefit to us all , and our sincerest thanks must go to Mr Cowgill, who has supported and encouraged us throughout the year.
