KARAT'E R.EFORT
If you ever wander down to the running track, on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon after school, you're bound to encounter a groub of young Karate students running through their Katas and other routines. Zen Do Kai Karate has had a club operating at B.G.G.S. since March of 1980, with numbers fluctuating between about five and a healthy thirty plus. At present we stand at a near thirty members on a good day. Sensai Elsa Kalejs, who has been our instructor since Sensei 'Philip Hughes' departure, has also had to leave us due to other commitrnents. Sempai Christina Conias, lst Dan Black Belt is now taking classes helped by four probationary Black Belts, Helen Jones, Leanne Peterson, and Rebecca and Matthew Keys. This year our School Day demonstration was organised by those attending classes. The demonstration was quite a success and those watching showed keen int€rest in what our club involves. Let's hope it will encourage new members to come along and learn this highly rewarding form of martial arts. Getting back to general training, we are working our White Belts towards their Blue Belt, including several new recruits from Boys' Grammar. The rest of us are persisting at improving our technique and cardio vascular capacity, which Sempai Christina is placing plenty of emphasis upon. Apart from the physical advantages of Karate in terms of fitness and self-defence, it provides the mental discipline necessary for efficient execution of movements and techniques. One must have a great awareness of all that goes on around him or herself. I am sure those who are members of the class find it of great use in school work, and other areas of their lives, that require discipline of some sort. Finally on behalf of all the club, I should like to extend our sincere thanks to Sensei Philip Hughes, who has always shown interest in our progress; Sensei Elsa Kalejs, our first female instructor who displayed tremendous patience with an occasionally difficult class; and Sempai Christina Conias who is coping admirably considering this is her first experience as instructor of the club. We will miss both Sensei Philip and Sensei Elsa, and wish them the best of luck in the future. Helen Jones (Yours in Martial Arts)
