JUDJS J UDIS- a village name imprints its mark upon my soul. HERE I stand -preparing for mwweuvres - a possible future war. · Beside a churchyard quiet, beneath a tall grey wall, I listen to the Sunday choir, sing Hallelujah! I feel a shadow cross my mind; for in mywar was peace. I nod my head, retilrn to tasks, and find oblivion. My radio is now turned on to quiet my doubts confessed; An excited voice with rasping breach, "Arabs have gained the East bank of Suez". A curiosity . .. and so I venture forth to see,: The church and yard, in quiet, for solitude, I seek. An old man, now custodian, shows me all around; The pounding in my head repeats: "Two hundred Syrian planes downed." He is a master of love this man, and proud of Judis. Graves of previous warriors I note, are all alike. In Judis, of course, equal they are born; And equal when they die. Young soldiers and soldiers -pictures on tombs impale iny mind. The years read back to: 1870, 1914- 1918, 1944. A II equal here - no rascism or ridicule - peaceful - sleeping under crosses. The .radio again - "Israel will not divulge her losses." I kndw I am a soldier, trained to protect my country; Wars, and wars again, repeat the insanity of man. These people here in Judis are now equal in release.
