G.P.S. Swimming Report Five weeks, and 1wo weeks, prior to the G.P.S. carnival we attended two pre-G.P.S. swimming meets at St. Peters and at Chandler respectively. With the aid of these two, along with a series of chaotic time trials, and many memorably gruelling training sessions, we came up with what we considered to be a lirst class team. On Saturday, the l4th of March at the magnificent Com- monwealth Games Aquatic Complex at Chandler the 198 I Girls' G.P.S. swimming carnival was staged. On the big day amid incredibly patriotic and encouraging cheering and war- cries led by the B.G.G.S. cheer squad, a fine display of swim- ming was given. Our team came a triumphant second behind Brisbane State High School, with outstanding performances by Louise Paetzholdt easily dominating the excitement and success of the day. Louise this year has competed in the Australian Age Titles and the Australian Open Titles in Perth and Adelaide and was selected in the team to tour America, producing exceptional results everywhere she went. We are all very proud of her. Our only disappointrnent ol the day came when we were narrowly beaten by Sommerville House in the Past Pupils Relay. Our past pupils, Sue Gordon, Amanda Leeson, Deb- bie Handley and Helen Price, all swam remarkably well and were unlucky to be so marginally beaten in the most exciting finish ol the day. Thanks must go to our coaches Mr. E,mery and Mrs. Bendeich: without their generous, dedicated efforts the success we obtained on the day would not have been possible. Overall Grammar displayed a fantastic amount ol sportsmanship and school spirit which must be commended. On behallolthe senior members olthe l98l team I would like to wish next year's team the very best of luck.
Interhouse Swimming Carnival Wednesday the 25th of February saw a spectacular mass migration ol green "Lilley Frogs", yellow "Wonder Woolcocks", blue "England Bulldogs", purple "Gibson Grape Apes", along with the dazzling red and orange colours ol Grilfith and Hirschfeld, down Gregory Terrace to Centenary Pools for what was to be a most exciting Interhouse Swimming Carnival. A line display of swimming was the order of the day, featur- ing fine performances by many top names such as Angela Wardrobe, Sheridon Scriven, Amanda Cooke, and Sally O'Carrol who took out the cup for the best individual perfor- mance, winning the most individual events of the day. House spirit generated in the forms of warcries, banners, and cheersquads was very strong and encouraging. England house took out the cup for winning overall after a long hard battle against the fierce attacks of the other five houses. All in all it was a very fast-moving, action-packed day which I am sure was enjoyed by all.
