HIRSCHFELD HOUSE REPORT 1980 has witnessed the re-introduction of the House System to Brisbane Girl's Grammar, and with the this re- introduction has come the creation of a new house - Hirschfelci - named appropriately after the novr retired Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dt'. Konrad Hirschfeld. lt would seem that this has almost been an experimental year, the year of learning by trial and error for all six houses; and Hirschfeld is no exception. The year started off slowly but surely; and looking back over the past months the great house builders - The Ultra Orange Orangutangs - have laid the foundations to their super-structure remarkably well for their 1st attempt. We initlally surprised ourselves when the Hirschfled Team took to the water in the lnter-House Swimming Competition. The incredible atmosphere, con- tributed to by all the Houses was highlighted by our vic- tory; gaining 1st place in the relay events, 1st place for non-relay events and overall winners of the Carnival. Our ability in the water was not to be the finish of Hirschfeld's sporting prowess. We admirably pulled off 3rd place in the Athletics (behind Gibson and Griffith). These achievemenis, however, were only possible because of co-operation throughout all levels of the House - from year B to year 12. The girls again proved their ability to work together for both our Hirschfeld House Assembly (which would not have been possible except for a last minute brain-storm and flash of superb organizalionai powers by a 6th former who wishes to remain anonymous) and of course School Day by which the House managed to raise $'1 ,400 net. Nothing however, is possible without some driving force or forces as the case may be. These are the people behind the scenes who continually offer assistance and support to the girls. The staff of Hirschfeld must most certainly be thanked for their unique combination of loglcal support (Mr. Garton and Mr. Bromily) combined with the more artistic and feminine backing of the re- maining staf{ (Mrs. Cave, Mrs. Coulter and Ms. Fyan). We cannot forget to mention a very sincere thank you however, to our House Mistress, Mrs. Chowdhury, without whose help, many of our efforts and achievements would not have eventuated and to Michelle St. Baker, Melinda Yann, Jan Hukins, Lucy Snelling, Fiona Sinnamon and Claire O'Grady who have been a ceaseless source of help to me throughout the year. ln conclusion it seems that all lcan wish for is that Hirschfeld House continues to strengthen throughout 1981 and that a method of inspiring greater enthusiasm during House Periods is possible. Just remember a wise old man said 'WE DON'T MONKEY AROUND - much'. Alison Thompson - Hirschfeld House Captain.
