1980 School Magazine
The house system has proved to be highly successful this year, and hopefully will continue to be so. Personally I would like to wish Griffith House the best of luck for the future, and thank all the house members and teachers for their support throughout the year. Susan Wright (House Captain).
GRIFFITH HOUSE REPORT 1980 1980 saw the off icial reintroduction of the house system at Grammar, and hence of Grlffith House. The house was named after Sir Samuel Griffith, an ex-trustee of the school. Our Jirst off icial house meeting was f ull of introductions. Miss Greet, our house mistress and hence Grade .1 2 house group teacher, introduced the other teachers in the house - Mrs. Colwill, Grade 11; Mrs. Torney, Grade 10; Mr. Stuart, Grade 9, and Mrs. Levey, Grade B. The reasons for the reintroduction of the house system were briefly discussed, and a general calendar of coming events was outlined. The girls in the house then set about deciding on a house theme. Finally the 'Happy House' was adopted, and it was decided to put our emphasis on good sportsmanship in all areas. The first major event of the year was the commence- ment of the round robin swimming. Each Tuesday and/or Wednesday house group meeting between February and April was spent competing against the other houses in events ranging {rom breastroke to float relays. After competing against all the houses except Lilley, Griffith remained undefeated. The 20th February saw us all troop down to the Valley pool for the interhouse swimming carnival. Griffith House far exceeded even our own expectations and came in second overall. This performance was repeated at the interhouse athletics on 4th September. Our great athletic ability was climaxed in the relay section where we ended up with the most points overall. Preparations began in second term for our house assembly to be held in late July. This date was later changed to October 241h, and so School Day then took first priority. Our main project for School Day this year was the after- noon tea with the theme of "Grammar Yesteryear". Our other projects included a highly successful poster stall run by the Grade 9's, a soda stall by the Grade 1O's, and a much needed parcel minding service organtsed by the Grade 8's. The girls co-operated together to make the day a highly successful one for Griffith House. The beginning of third term brought with it two changes in the house. Firstly Mrs. McPheat took over as our Grade B house group teacher, replacing Mrs. Levey who is now teaching part time. The second change came as a result of Miss Greet's resignation as House Mistress. Due to other responsibilities Miss Greet found herself very short of time, and consequently Miss Boyd became our new Grade 12 house group teacher and House Mistress. Miss Greet has maintained her house ties, of- fering her assistance wherever needed. Evidence of this was clearly illustrated on School Day when Miss Greet devoted a lot of her time to helping with the house activ- ities. Though Miss Boyd has only been with us a short time she has proved an endless source of ideas and assistance. Our assembly in October will be run on a theme surroun- ding United Nations Day and the importance of equality. Emphasis will be put on the common link between all nationalities of people. This month (October) round robin sport begins again with the Grade 11 house group captain and sports captain taking charge of the organisation.
