NEW YEAR,S EVE "Listen, Iove - what do you want to drink?" Yes, that was her. The holiday camp in the mountains - she was different then, thinner - hair longer, perhaps. "Vodka and orange, darling" Well, you know them - always acting, never serious about anything. - There was music playing - Beatles or someone and I couldn't hear it - everyone just talked. And I loved that song. "The supper was just heavenly" or so someone said but it really didn't matter who, as long as the hostess could think clearly enough to make some superficial modest remark. And everyone was raving about some un- kuown poet who had just published a fantastic book. But I suppose they don't even sell it now. - | yg25 left out because I hadn't read it, but my life hasn't suffered. Then the mood changed - I don't recall how. One minute laughing and dancing, the next silence. And everyone went home - tired after the climax. The coming of one of a million years and it didn't really matter because it was gone.

BEAGLES Beagles are not the same as Bassets, as many people think they are. For a start they're smarter, quicker to respond, and lar more disobedient! I have three beagles; a father, mother and son, and to look at me you'll see the great strain this puts on me (dark rings circle my eyes from ris- ing, bleary-eyed at dawn to prepare their break- fast, great scars of battle where the puppy, Bosun, mistook me lor a lump o't' wood, not to mention a certain slimness from chasing balls and four-Iegged thieves). At the moment, Bosun has a digging mania. Each morning my mother is greeted by a new- born hole, a pair ol pudgy, black paws and in- nocent "turn to butter" brown eyes. Skipper, the father, is eleven, q sensible, greyed old hound (he guards the lady next door at night - she's terrilied of burglars!). To describe the mother (her name, Tinkabelle, in itself suggests mischief ), thin:k of a very pretty, rather dense young woman who works as a double agent. She is ball-mad, and has been known to race out and play ball in the middle of nursing four-day-old pups. But altogether, they make a. very amusing family. (FINANCIAL AUTHORITIES WARN THAT BEAGLES ARE A BANKRAPTCY HAZARD). L teays 28
