where the male population appeared to be quite excessive, only to be greeted by an indignant family of plovers. These poor kids were bewildered by the sudden urge for some of the bus's company to dance the "Havana Gilah" up and down the motel (Did I hear a zip rip, Jane?). The lack of night life had one advantage in that it gave us the opportunity to catch up on some sleep by having a late night rather than an early morning. On Monday, we said goodbye to our last motel and drove to Launceston where we went sight-seeing and shopped until 3.00 p.m. Our plane was due to leave Iaunceston at 5.00, so we arrived at 4.00 with plenty of time to spare but unfortunately because of bad weather the flight was delayed. We had over two hours to wait and so naturally looked around for Al; we thought that perhaps;he could drive us around to filI in the time. To our astonishment the man had disappeared. The thought ofhaving to put up with us any longer was too much for him. The last we saw of dear "Al" and his bus was a red blur disappearing around the corner. In Melbourne when we arrived it was raining and after a small matter of lost cases, Rod drove us to our Caravan Park (in safe hands again!) where we all bunked in and organized a typically mainland dinner- canned of course. Next day was our free day in Melbourne and we Brisbane bushies' really 'went to town."'Went" is the only way to describe our money. On Wednesday we hit the road once more but this time we were homeward bound. Of course we spent the whole day anticipating another lovely night at- guess where-Wagga Wagga! It also just so happened that some people iue very interested in Ned Kelly_and held the bus up while we stopped at every Kelly: museum and tourist attraction. Thursday saw us journeying from Wagga to Sydney, where Uncle Rodney,'endeavouredtto look calm as he negotiated the peak-hour traffic. In Sydney we saw all the usual tourist attractions and on Saturday afternoon we set off on the final leg of our trip. Sunday morning saw us back in Brisbane outside good old Grammar greeting all our families. Our hearty thanks go to Miss Williams, Miss Vernon and of course 'Unclb Rodney' for an absolutely marvellous holiday. Robyn Torney 5A. BOARDERS'NOTES This has been ayear of great change in the boarding school. We were sorry to lose Miss Whittaker at the end of first term. She had been with us for 16 years and always given us help and encouragement. Miss Slater, her replacement, has managed wonderftrlly. This year St. John's Cathedral gained a new Dean and a new Precentor, who have captivated our interests The guitarists among us take it in turn with the Brisbane Grammar School boarders to provide music during the Service at 8 a.m. With the updating of the Services, this innovation is appreciated very much - many boarders have contributed.
The facilities in the boarding school have been continually updatqd. This year we have also seen the installation of a burglar alarm system. Mrs. Riggs has kindly organized a library for boarders, which has been in continual use. Our social life has mainly been confined to enjoy- able evenings with Brisbane Grammar School, although during First Term the Fifths and Sixths had a dance in conjunction with Churchie. For this occasion the grmnasium was decorated with palm leaves and ball- oons which looked most attractive. We would like to thank all the day girls who lent their records for taping during this occasion. We would like to thank all hosts and hostesses for offering their homes in our leisure time.
We were very successlui rn the Interhouse Athletics and Cross Country this year. A special note ofthanks to Sally McGill, Ann Bambling and Marion Page' Congratulations go to Fiona McGill winner of the Miss Boarding School Quest, and Wendy Ross the runner- up. Also to Ann Brownlie who won the Princess title and Angela Morris her runner-up.
We would also like to oll'er our congratulations to Linda Carne,. Donna Baldwin and Judy Fraser on their success in the Science Competition. Thanks to all the teachers who have'generously given up their time to help boarders in the normal run of school life. Also we would like to thank Sister Martin, Miss Maher and Mrs. Gorman, who have joined us this year and helped us in every way possible. Our thanks too, to Miss Nancy Paterson, and all staff for their helpful assistance, Without the direction of Miss Shaw and the Trustees, many facilities would not be made available to us. s7
