around in the middle of Lang Park. After weeks of dropped and fumbled balls at practice, they 'clicked'. No school, that day, gained more points than Grarnmar on the Ballgames, and moreover, the Senior Tunnel and Zis was responsible for one of the 2 ballgames records broken thar duy. These results are a tribute to the keen school spirit that existed amongst the teams during the weeks of practice. In the Junior Shot Putt, Deborah Handley ernulated Margaret Marriott's success, last year, in this event, but Deborah was a few inches short of Margaret's recofd. Obviously inspired bv the efforts of the ball- games, the Shuttle Relays went out and ran with- out exception, f.at above expectations. The three teams in the finals all ran second and undoubtedly it was the great number of seconds that won the Cups. \7ith the Circular Relays the only evenrs left to be run and State High very close, the points tally was nervously watched. Fortunately, Grammar's smength I^y in these events and with a first and second in'the Senior and fntermediate Relays respectively, Grarnmar was in an unas- sailable position. After 8 years mavelling, the Association Cup was back in Grammar hands again. The Junior Cup was retained bv Grammar despite the fact that no Junior Relay teams ran in the finals. Their success assuredly augurs well for future teams. The fntermediate C.rp slipped through Grammar's hands bv a mere two points to B.S.H.S. and we congratulate them on winning it. The Senior tearn won the Senior C,rp by a record number of points . - To B.S.H.S.. who were second to Grammar overall go our thanks for the closeness of corr- petition they afforded trs. And finally, the team's thanks are extended to the Sports Mismesses, Mrs. Salzman and Miss Hatton for their time and effort they spent in preparing the team and the energy that went into producing a urinning olre. For his valuable coach- ing hints for the Circular Relays we thank Mr. Hall. Irr conclusion, we would like to wish the school continued success for the future. - BARBARA JORDAN (VrA)

The Inter-house Athletics Carnival was held on the morning of Friday, L 3th June, on the Normanby Oval. This yeffi the Senior and Junior Inter-house relays were elimin ated in favour of a shuttle relay for each age group. This increase in the number of teams gave more girls, who would have formerly sat on the sidelines, a chance to cornpete for their houses. The d^y was very successful with Lilley winning the Inter- house Athletics C.rp and Woolcock the England Relay C,rp. The School Athletics Prize, for the most nurnber of individual points gained rnras shared among Sheree Rich, Suzanne Nixon, Alison Bruce and Barbaru Jordan. On Saturday, 19th Jrly, the team was for- tunate in being able 'to compete against Cavendish Road High School at Cavendish Road. Much obvious preparation went into the efficient running of events and credit and our thanks are due to Cavendish Road's Athletic Coach, Mr. Peter Hall. The competition was very valuable to the team's preparation for the forthcoming Inter- school Sports and helped in the affangement of relay teams. Sfhilst at Cavendish Road many girls took the opportunity to compete in those athletic events that are found on the State Secondary School programme, and although some found the hurdles a little too srenuous and the 880 yards a little too far, all enjoyed the novelty these events held. IilTednesday, 6th August, and the Inter-school Athletics Carnival found the Grammar team hopeful of maintaining last year's third place. The Senior Circular Relay team in the third event of the day, gave an indication of Grammar's strength by breaking the record, the first for the d^y in the heats, and again in the aftetnoon's final, bv slicing a few more tenths off, to bring the record from 53.5 to 52.4 seconds. The morning evetrts showed the depth of the team with a string of valuable second places in the individual sprints. Much to the team's consternation however, Grammar was found to be lying only third at lunch-time with a considerable deficit to make up in view of the afternoon events. The Ballgames have on several occasions in the past been the cause of Grammar's downfall and this year gave evidence of being no exception until rhe various teams began throwing the ball
