CLUBS & ACTIVITIES
ANIME T he focus of Anime Club is to bring fellow anime enjoyers together to watch anime, read manga, and talk about upcoming anime. Both Captains are passionate about watching anime, feeling drawn to the art styles and interesting stories and characters in each show. Our current coordinator is Mr Laur from the English Department, who is also an anime enthusiast. So far this year we have watched Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun —the stunning visuals and captivating premise and characters make it an amazing watch. We also enjoyed watching Haikyuu!! and at the end of the year, we planned a cosplay photoshoot. Zoe Harding-Smith (11M) and Elise Gianduzzo (11W) CAPTAINS APOLLO CLUB The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us—Faber, character of Fahrenheit 451. A pollo is an ancient Greek deity of many talents, but most importantly he is a patron of the arts, which we at the Apollo Club appreciate in the form of the written word. The Apollo Club is a book club for senior students in Year 10 and above. We meet fortnightly to discuss the portrayal of themes and concepts in our latest chosen text. These discussions can quickly turn into lively—but always respectful—debates on morality or the dispositions of our favourite comfort characters. While we do mostly talk about texts, this year we have deliberately stretched our horizons. While talking through the classics like Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Jane Austen’s Emma , as well as more recent publications like Xiran Jay Zhao’s Iron Widow and Anthony Doerr’s Cloud Cuckoo Land , we’ve also discussed the narrative podcast The Magnus Archives, and even the hit graphic novel by Alice Oseman called Heartstopper . Apollo members don’t have to be dedicated bibliophiles to join in on the fun. A big thanks to Mr Rawson, our coordinator, for allowing us the space to unpack the mysteries of our studied texts, and for modelling how to engage in energetic debates—disagreeing, at times, without being disagreeable. ART WORKSHOPS E very term, students look forward to the much-loved Art Workshops. The workshops are a valuable chance to gain insight into the making practices of local artists, ask questions, and experiment with various new mediums. In Term 1, students experimented with mono printing and collage techniques. In Term 2, in a two-session workshop, Brisbane sculptor, Carolyn V Watson, guided students to create their own fantastical creature sculpture from cane, wire and plaster. Attracting both Visual Art students who want to extend their practice, and those seeking a creative afternoon activity, the workshops offer a fun opportunity for all to get involved with Visual Art.
