TREES
And I wonder, why? Are we scared,
Trees. All they do is grow. To the sky, and in the soil, and all around.
That they’ll take our spot, At the top of the food chain, Controlling the world? No. It’s because we see their lives, As taking up space, And we see their deaths, As an opportunity to sustain our wants. The things we don’t need, but want. So we need them anyway. Or do we? Is our future set in stone, Hard as the corpses of the fallen trees? Or is there a way, To change our thoughts, To stop the plague, To save the trees? For they just want to live. ELIN SCHULZ (8R) Year 8 Slam Poetry Competition Winner 2022
Living their lives saving our lives. Breathing out what we breathe in. You might say they don’t care, They don’t feel, That they aren’t even alive. But of course they are. And of course, they want to live. But do we let them?
No, we don’t. We kill them. Kill them all. For where you and I stand, Is a graveyard of forests, A cemetery of thousands, Who just wanted to live. And yet every day,
The corpses of trees pile, Like victims of a plague. From the dark ages. In the street. Gone but not gone, For is furniture gone? Are tools and utensils for our pleasure gone?
