EDITORIAL

O n behalf of the Publications Committee, welcome to the Brisbane Girls Grammar School School Magazine 2022. As Publications Captain, I have had the privilege of leading this year’s Committee as we’ve created, collected, and collated content for the magazine that is currently in your hands. One of the Committee’s major roles—beyond facilitating article collection—has been to develop a design inspired by the School motto. You don’t have to be an expert in floriography to know that flowers have symbolic meanings. Gratitude, affection, sorrow—nearly every sentiment imaginable can be expressed with flowers, which is why this year’s school motto— Bloom with the Blue —was so immediately inspiring for us in creating this magazine. While blooming flowers can represent ephemeral beauty, one need only think of the dandelions that grow out of cracks on concrete to realise the resilience and strength that can lie beneath a delicate exterior. In the House section this year, you’ll find a colourful kaleidoscope of flowers that represent the traits of Grammar girls, chosen by the Year 12 members of each respective House. From Beanland’s cherry blossom—symbolising laughter and growth—to Woolcock’s evening primrose—symbolic of friendship—each House’s chosen flower displays their prismatic values. In addition to my House's (England) delphinium, representing goodwill, another blue bloom can be spotted sprawling across the cover and throughout the magazine. This flower, the Brunonia australis , commonly known as the ‘Blue Pincushion’, is a native bloom that symbolises strength and resilience. It is thus symbolic of the enduring Grammar Spirit that has persisted unfailingly through the challenging year that has been 2022. The way these flowers bloom in beautiful blue clusters is also a reminder of the important support network provided by the Grammar sisterhood and larger Grammar community that has nourished our growth. Speaking of community, there would be no magazine without all the Grammar girls and Grammar staff who have contributed their invaluable time this year. A massive thank you to you all for writing, editing, and proofreading the articles that make this publication what it is: a vibrant retrospective on this amazing year. For all the behind-the-scenes work coordinating the committee, I sincerely thank Miss Talbot and Mr McGrath. And on behalf of the committee, I would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Ms Chirgwin in Communications for being the glue that brought the magazine together—your unwavering support of our vision is deeply appreciated. I hope you will enjoy the fruits of our labour as you look back on the snapshot of 2022 abloom within these pages! Lucianna Yu (12E)

T here can be no doubt that in 2022, the girls and young women of Brisbane Girls Grammar School brought to life our motto, Bloom with the Blue —with all of its underlying themes of Spirit, Inclusivity and Growth . The School Magazine will be, I hope, a lifelong memento for all of our students who were such an important part of Girls Grammar this year. In its pages you will find beautifully crafted stories and photos that capture the essence of the motto. Our Publications Committee has thoughtfully created this tangible keepsake that will be treasured by Grammar girls as they look back on their time at BGGS. While the start of the academic year was delayed, and at times interrupted, Grammar girls have been exuberant—in the classroom,

It has brought great joy to see the growth and progress of Grammar girls this year, and to work with their teachers and our professional staff who provide the experience students are able to learn from and enjoy. To the Year 12 class of 2022, you are ready to embark on a new journey beyond School as Grammar Women. I hope you look back on your time here with many happy memories—a place of growth, inclusivity, and spirit. Thank you for your leadership and enthusiasm, I wish you every happiness and hope your pathway provides rewarding challenges, triumphs and much joy. Ms Jacinda Euler Welsh PRINCIPAL

on the sporting field, stage and beyond. They continue to think critically, to ask questions and to learn both inside and outside of the classroom. It has been a year of strengthening the Girls Grammar sisterhood, with the return of sporting competitions, and live music and drama performances offering opportunities for girls to revel in the Grammar spirit, to champion one other in pursuit of their physical and creative talents. As detailed in this thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented magazine, students have been involved in such varied pursuits. From service, community and leadership programs to the performing and visual arts, music ensembles, sporting teams, study groups, debating, and clubs.

A s Head Girls, we began our year filled with a great sense of hope. We had faith that the entire student body would support us—and each other—in ensuring that 2022 was not only a successful year, but a memorable one. We are glad to say that our hopes have been realised and fulfilled beyond what we could have ever imagined. Our 2022 Student Council first decided on three aspects we wanted to further develop and foster: spirit; inclusivity; and growth. From there, we created our motto— Bloom with the Blue . While short in length, our motto is big in meaning. We hoped it would inspire our Grammar sisters to strive for their own success—to bloom —with more confidence than ever before. We wanted them to be comforted and uplifted by the endless support of the School community and to be able to carry the motto and foundations they learned at Grammar wherever they go—even beyond the white picket fence. We wanted them to bloom and strive with the blue, never alone . Throughout the year, our goal of enhancing spirit, inclusivity, and growth in our community was met with triumph in all areas of Grammar life. Some notable highlights of the year include

every dress-up event in the pouring rain, our true Grammar spirit proved thoroughly unsinkable. We found that, like flowers, Grammar girls grow and bloom strongest after the most challenging seasons. We are incredibly grateful to have been guided under the wings of our Principal, Ms Jacinda Euler Welsh. Throughout this year, she has taught us the true meaning of leadership—to lead from both the front and the back—and has helped us greatly to grow as students and as Head Girls. Our gratitude also extends to our Dean of Students, Ms Melinda Egan, and Year 12 Coordinator, Ms Sarah Boyle. Their incredible selflessness and support have inspired us greatly this year. So, as we bid farewell to Brisbane Girls Grammar School, we wish all the girls the best as they continue their BGGS journey, carrying with them the lessons learned this year. We hope our Grammar sisters remember that wherever they are, wherever they go, and whomever they become, they will always have the support of BGGS behind them. They will always be able to Bloom with the Blue . Georgia (Gigi) Souyave-Murphy (12W) and Isabel Stephens (12M)

QGSSSA Swimming in Term 1 and Athletics in Term 3, as—according to multiple senior staff members—these competitions had the loudest, most enthusiastic BGGS cheer squads in recent memory. Students from all Year levels decorated their faces with blue paint and roared as they encouraged their Grammar sisters to greatness. This year also saw the introduction of talent shows, busking, and picnics to accompany our various Blue Days and Galantine’s Day celebrations, traditions we hope to see continued. Additionally, with the help of the amazing BGGS staff, 2022 saw the re-introduction of the much-anticipated Year 12 Bi-Grammar competition against Brisbane Grammar School. Our senior cohort eagerly participated in three separate rounds—Touch Football, a ‘Battle of the Bands’, and Netball— with Girls Grammar narrowly beating the boys next door 2-1. Reflecting on the year more generally as Head Girls, we could not be more proud of how every member of the BGGS community embraced all that this year had to offer despite its multiple challenges. It seems that, though we started with online learning, a flood, and seemingly had

I nspired by Sophia Beanland, pioneer and Lady Principal (1882 1890), the 2022 motto for Beanland House was Pink and Proud, Let’s Get Loud . As a House, we believe this encapsulates the spirit, pride, and enthusiasm that Beanland girls demonstrate every day. Despite the challenging start to the year, facing the continuation of the global pandemic and severe flooding, these ongoing obstacles challenged us as individuals and ultimately united all of Beanland. We may have kicked off the year online, but this didn’t dampen morale as the whole House dressed in their pink to come together in spirit. Then, the excitement to return to campus came in full force as we hosted Beanland’s House Party following the theme ‘Pink Pyjama Party’! We saw girls dress up in their favourite pink pyjamas and fluffy slippers as they participated in friendly competitions, including doughnut eating, musical statues, and limbo. Throughout the year, Fridays became our favourite day as we started each morning with House Assemblies. These were quite active with crazy obstacle courses and fun team-building exercises. House Assemblies promoted teamwork, physical activity, and healthy rivalry through engaging and enjoyable activities across all age groups within the House.

Overall, as House Captains, we focused solely on promoting happiness and ensuring that every single Beanland Bear felt supported and welcomed in the House. Beanland’s competitiveness and spirit was put on display at the Interhouse events this year. We showcased the pink support system that underpins our House through face paint, costumes, and posters to congratulate and appreciate all achievements whether academic, sporting, or artistic. Memorably, we came second in both the Interhouse Athletics and Choir Competition! It is clear to all of us that, given the amazing support and passion from our Head of House during our laughter-filled meetings, this year’s success is truly owed to Mrs Cross. We are both so proud of our Beanland sisters and will always cherish the loving experiences we have made. As we embark upon our new chapter in life and leave Girls Grammar behind, it is our hope that our pink sisters continue to foster the incredible spirit and pride of the Beanland Bear and make the most of every opportunity to be pink and proud wherever they go. I n 2022, our House Group collectively decided we wanted to embrace the values of unity, love and transformation. We created our motto, True to Our Crew in England Blue , with the hashtag #bluecrew. This year, we have strived to uphold our motto throughout all aspects of England House by acknowledging the individual interests and talents of each Eagle, and how each of their individual experiences and input contributes to our unified House. Despite a delay due to flooding, we kick-started the year with the much anticipated ‘Boot Scootin’ Blue’ House Party. Girls were encouraged to rock bandannas, cowboy hats, boots, denim, and flannel shirts. The afternoon consisted of the iconic donut game, Nutbush dancing and the England runway which featured the likes of an inflatable dinosaur, Bananas in Pyjamas and Megaminds costumes! House Assemblies were a highlight of the year, where we were blessed to see all our England Eagles each Thursday morning in the Louise McDonald Room. From pancake and pastry breakfasts to trivia, karaoke, the toilet-paper game, and our guess-the-teacher powerpoint (baby photo edition), it was lovely to spend time with England and unite as a House. To promote awareness for our House Charity, Youngcare, our House Service Captains created an initiative, YoungCakes. Year 12 volunteers baked enough cupcakes to provide each student within the House their own cupcake. Students were encouraged to decorate their cupcake with the Youngcare logo and then photograph their results during House Group. It was rewarding to see girls enjoy this shared experience and develop a greater awareness of the essential need to raise money to provide appropriate accommodation for young people living with disability.

With the cancellation of Open Day, our fundraising for Youngcare was reimagined, and with the help of Year 11 students, we sold our famous churros in frozen pre-packs to families to enjoy at home, as well as at our famous House stall during a Friday lunchtime. This event raised more than $1000 for Youngcare and was a great success. England girls showed a tremendous amount of support at Interhouse Cross Country and Athletics, waving signs, cheering athletes, and flooding QSAC with a sea of blue. Fuelled by blue clouds and sour straps, our enthusiasm was reflected in our successes on the track, with England placing seventh overall at this year’s Interhouse Athletics Competition. This year, our House voted the song Breaking Free from High School Musical to be our Interhouse Choir song. Our intense practice sessions were energised with lollies and fun dance moves, which paid off on the day and resulted in an incredible team performance. Overall, it has been an enjoyable and memorable year for all our England Eagles. The love and support from our House has been unmatched and we are both so proud of the involvement and participation from all students. It has been an honour to have had the opportunity to lead the flock this year and watch every single person learn and develop together, as one big blue nest. Being a part of England truly feels like a second family, and whilst we are both sad to be leaving the flock, we know it is in good hands with Miss Stark and the rest of the #bluecrew. GIBSON

012 | BRISBANE GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL 2022

T he Year 12 Gibson House seniors for 2022 aimed for the gladiator hood to embrace individuality, purple spirit, and participation, and hence the motto for the year, Gib it your all , was created to encompass these goals. Our success and House pride throughout the year reflects how well each girl ‘gave it their all’. Despite a wet start to the year due to the floods, fuelled by purple sour straps and cheer, Gibson dominated Interhouse Cross Country on the last day of Term 2 placing third overall. Term 3 proved to be busy; however, it was very rewarding to see the girls thrive at Interhouse Athletics and shine at Interhouse Choir with our rendition of Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson.

For the first time in 2022, Gibson has supported Dress for Success, an organisation with the mission of empowering women to thrive in work and in life by providing a network of support and professional attire. Service has been at the forefront of Gibson this year, with Year 7 girls jumping their hearts out at Jump Rope for Heart, the Year 8 and 9 girls organising delicious bake stalls for their World Vision child, and Year 10 students reaching out into the broader community through their Community Service project. Although it was disappointing Year 11 girls did not get the opportunity to share their iconic Open Day strawberry ice creams with the public in Term 3, the School was delighted when the stall was revamped during a lunch time in Term 4. Along with the Year 12 girls’ final year of senior Service, Gibson was able to donate an incredible amount for Dress for Success. We are so grateful to Gibson House for making 2022 such an amazing year. Thanks to all the House Group teachers, Mrs Boltman and Mrs Finch. Together we have made 2022 a year to remember. T his year’s motto for Griffith House was Unleash your spider, let the red shine brighter . Our motto encapsulates what it means to be a part of Griffith House, always full of spirit and pride. Since the beginning of the year, Griffith seniors have strived to encourage girls to embrace their individuality and support each other in doing so. In Term 1, we kicked off the year with a House Party, where we saw everyone decked out in Disco attire, full of enthusiasm ready to battle it out on the dance floor. Term 2 and 3 consisted of Interhouse Cross Country, Choir and Athletics, where we saw Griffith ‘unleash their spider’ to achieve an amazing second, fourth and fifth place, respectively. It was amazing to see so many spirited girls coming together to support the team. The highlight of 2022 would be our House Assembly competition, the Griffith Games, where each Year level, along with a team of teachers, battled it out in a series of trivia, obstacle courses, and Just Dances. It was great to see all the girls getting involved and starting off the day with an enthusiastic (and competitive) smile. This year, we proudly supported Eat Up, a non-profit charity that delivers school lunches to Aussie children in need. Due to the cancellation of Open Day, 11R showed great initiative by using the chocolate, originally for the lob-a-choc stall for a bake sale, to raise money for Eat Up. Additionally, in Term 4, the Griffith Service Captains held a sandwich-making afternoon to support the Eat Up charity and supply lunches to children around Australia. We also ran a

push-up competition that supported the Push For Better Foundation, which raises awareness for mental health. Griffith girls came together in House Group to smash out more than 14 000 push-ups over the month of June. We are beyond proud of the drive and generosity displayed by Griffith girls this year, truly channelling the motto in everything we do. Thank you to our House Group teachers for their ongoing support and enthusiasm (and competitiveness) throughout the year. We are also extremely grateful for our Head of House, Mrs Thomas, who brings the magic to every House event. We are honoured to have led the most amazing group of girls, who have embodied our motto and created a fun and supportive environment for everyone. 016 | BRISBANE GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL 2022

H irschfeld House is an effervescent streak of tigers, each one with their unique stripes, and all a part of a big orange family. Each member of the House has a competitive and energetic spirit, and we never fail to support and cheer on one another. Where one goes, we all go. It’s difficult to pinpoint one thing that makes Hirschfeld special when our House is filled with 170 individuals whose diverse talents in combination makes our vibrant and diverse radiance. Our motto for this year was Claws Out . We wanted to create an environment where each girl could feel comfortable to express herself as an individual by bringing their unique set of claws out. It is equally important to us that they bring that same enthusiasm and bravery to create one united tiger, showing the rest of the School just how fierce and unstoppable Hirschfeld is. Our 2022 Hirschfeld House Party held in Term 1 was an opportunity for the whole House to celebrate Hirschfeld and the year to come. This year our theme was ‘Orange Icons’—from Ed Sheeran to Garfield, the girls went all out. Interhouse Swimming Carnival took on a different format this year. While no House points were awarded, individuals were invited to complete to gain possible selection in the School Swimming Team.

Cross Country was held in Term 2 and the hilly course was no match for the girls in orange. The Athletics Carnival in Term 3 saw the girls getting their claws out as girls leaped over hurdles and sent javelins flying, securing points for the House. The Hirschfeld girls showcased their amazing teamwork skills in the relays, expertly passing the baton, and sprinting through the finish line. Finally, Interhouse Choir was a blast with Hirschfeld blaring Classic . We must give a huge thank you to our Sport Captains, AJ Tucker (12H) and Tiarn O’Donnell (12 H), and Choir Captains, Charlotte Callinan (12H), Scarlett McLellan (12H) and Ingrid Liu (12H), for their organisation of the girls leading up to, and on, these exciting days. Hirschfeld’s charity this year was WWF, and, for the first year, we sponsored a tiger! In addition to this, Service Captains, Julia Guo (12H) and Kirra Van Nispen (12H), led our continual support of the Smith Family and our sponsor child, Harmony. We are so grateful to Mrs Dabelstein for her unwavering support as Head of House, and to everyone who made the year so memorable! Milly Derrick (12H) and Lottie Johnston (12H) HOUSE CAPTAINS

LILLEY

018 | BRISBANE GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL 2022

G et mean, get keen, and fire up the green! was the motto for Lilley House in 2022. This year, we wanted to spark a more competitive flare within our Froggie sisters, and so after much deliberation, we chose our motto, and concocted a brand-new war cry for the House, retiring the old one to become the ‘Lilley song’. Although our goals did not exactly go to plan, with attendance at the Swimming Carnival being limited to competitive swimmers only, Lilley House came back better than ever at the first Interhouse event of the year—Cross Country—where everyone put in their best efforts to tackle the hills at Victoria Park to secure an admirable sixth place. Once again, things didn’t exactly go to plan with the cancellation of Open Day, meaning Lilley girls weren’t sent into their annual fudge frenzy to provide enough fudge to supply the entire Brisbane Girls Grammar School community. Despite this, Year 11 Lilley girls manned a smaller-scale fudge stall held at lunch in Term 4 to raise funds for our House Charity: Lily House. Next on the agenda was Interhouse Athletics—a particularly special event for the Year 7, 8, and 9 girls who had never had an Athletics Carnival before. It was a fantastic day, and everyone was ecstatic to hear Ms Euler Welsh announce that Lilley House had come first place at the carnival—for the first time in 22 years!

A big thank you must go to Mia Hamilton (12L) and Bronte Stathis (12L) for their role as our House Sports Captains, and the tireless effort they put in behind the scenes to ensure Lilley House had a girl in almost every race. Interhouse Choir was the next event in the busy calendar, where we channelled our inner Harry Styles and sang Drag me Down by One Direction. Although we didn’t come away with first place, it was lots of fun wearing backwards caps in front of the entire school, and the atmosphere after the performance was unforgettable. Overall, 2022 was a fantastic year for Lilley House filled with fun, competition, and bonding as a House—none of this would have been possible without our fantastic Head of House, Mrs Edwards, and her ongoing support throughout the entirety of the year. W elcome to the best House in the School Magazine. It’s Caizha and Tia, Mackay House Captains, and what a year 2022 has been. All the Mackay angels embraced our motto: These wings were made to fly , At Interhouse sports events, yes we did try, but following the results, we should probably stick to the sky. Budapest was sung at Interhouse Choir, And we gotta say, Mackay dropped those melodies like fire. At House Assemblies on Monday mornings we made no delay to bring back, The groups from all grades, called a MacPac! Playing water pong, hoop games, kahoots and choir videos too, Each morning our House proved our Mackay spirit is true. Pancake breakfasts were a success, Despite the nutella and ice cream making a mess.

The Year 9 filmed a groovy choir video for Just a Cloud Away , We loved the dancing, singing, and Mr Sezgin’s moves—they were a slay. The Year 8s were well-fed when we gave them oreos, And we were impressed by their House Group’s engaging convos. Our Year 10s raised money for our House Charity, Miracles for Melanoma, through their bake sale, and we are so proud of the difference their donation makes on a widespread scale. The Year 7 to 12 buddies met each week on Friday morning, With hot chocolates, cookie decorating, keyring creating, and poster making— morning House Groups were never boring. Thanks to our Prefects, Service, Sport, Choir, Spirit and Media Captains too, And the rest of our Mackay angels, we can’t forget you. Finally, we thank Ms Jans, and our House Group Teachers, for helping us with all their might, There is nowhere else we’d rather you be, than in the House of WHITE. So, our year has now come to an end, But thank you for helping us take this year full send. Tia Fitzpatrick (12M) and Caizha Lee (12M) HOUSE CAPTAINS

Fluffy, delicious, warm, and golden brown, none of our angels could turn a plate down.

Our postponed House Party was themed ‘Out of this World’, We dressed up as angels, aliens, ate pizza, cake, and twirled. The Year 11s wore their lab coats—it was amazing, Meanwhile the Year 7s on the D-floor were non-stop raving.

O'CONNOR

022 | BRISBANE GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL 2022

W hile the year commenced with a Zoom meeting, rather than the typical House Group, 2022 has been more successful than we had first anticipated. O’Connor’s House Party was themed ‘Wild Wild West’ and it was a great start to the year, kickstarting our time back on campus. Our motto for the year, The sisterhood starts with our octopi hearts , created by the 2022 O’Connor seniors was set to encompass three key values: kindness; individuality; and teamwork—each represented by the three hearts in an octopus. O’Connor managed to take home the win at Interhouse Cross Country with a close one-point lead ahead of Griffith. Without the immense efforts and participation of all the girls in the House, this win wouldn’t have been possible. It really goes to show how important it is to show up, get involved, and make every point count. While Interhouse Athletics did not quite go our way, we managed to make a come-back for Interhouse Choir with the well-known hit You Belong with Me by Taylor Swift, where O’Connor brought home a well-deserved third place.

Early in the year, the media was flooded with news focused on the war between Russia and Ukraine. The war had devastating impacts on Ukrainian families and so, this year, we decided to dedicate our House Charity to UNICEF Australia. In doing so, we hoped to be able to implement real change, now, to be able to support children and families in desperate need of support. Although Open Day this year did not go ahead, we were still able to raise money for our House Charity by holding the ‘O’Connic’ Brownie stall during lunch. While we were faced with some obstacles this year, we were able to overcome all that challenged us; however, this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Year 12 O’Connor and our amazing Head of House, Ms Boyle. Overall, our experience this year has been even more incredible than we had hoped. Olivia Patane (12O) and Alexis Zacharyga (12O) HOUSE CAPTAINS

WOOLCOCK

024 | BRISBANE GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL 2022

T his year for Woolcock was an incredibly successful one, full of spirit, excitement, and of course, yellow. We are so incredibly proud of every Woolcock-atoo for everything that we, as a House, have achieved this year. Our goals for 2022 were to unite Woolcock as a family, full of unbreakable support, while also representing the School’s focus on spirit, growth, and inclusivity. The Woolcock reputation has always been welcoming, kind natured, a House where everyone puts in 100 per cent, and this year was no different. Fireflies shine your light, lead us through the night was the motto devised by 12 Woolcock to embody everything that was so special about Woolcock House. Fireflies represent the unity and connections amongst all Woolcock students, which is something we hoped to continue to strengthen throughout the year. We began in Term 1 with a belated House Party where the girls were able to share their excitement for the year to come. With the theme of ‘Golden Days’ shaping many of the outfits, everyone showed off their gold and yellow, as well as many feather boas. Miss Woolcock was crowned once again, allowing a few Woolcock-atoos to share their passion for Woolcock while competing for the crown. We were lucky enough to start the Interhouse events off with a bang at Cross Country in Term 2. Our Woolcock-atoos rallied together and went all out in their running costumes, which returned the following term for the infamous Interhouse Athletics Carnival.

Woolcock’s immense spirit and dedication was also demonstrated off the field at the long awaited Interhouse Choir Competition, where we put on a show with Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi . The 2022 House Charity chosen by Woolcock was Breast Friends—an organisation committed to raising funds to fight breast cancer. The Year 11 ice cream sandwich stall in Term 3 was very successful, and some Woolcock students from both Year 11 and Year 12 were fortunate enough to attend the Breast Friends Afternoon Out, a charity luncheon where we could learn more about the organisation and help raise funds. This year showed the strength of Woolcock girls as they overcame unprecedented times during floods and COVID-19, proving their collective resilience and unity. We would like to thank our wonderful Head of House, Mrs Ross, for providing us all with never-ending kindness, as well as the Woolcock families and House Group teachers for their continuous support. And most importantly, we could not be more thankful for every Woolcock-atoo who helped to make this year so memorable. Emma Blucher (12W) and Ella Coxon (12W) HOUSE CAPTAINS

FOUNDATION DAY

042 | BRISBANE GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL 2022 O n 9 March, we celebrated Foundation Day—otherwise known as the School’s birthday. This year the School turned 147 years old! Foundation Day is a special occasion on which we reflect on the

Ms Euler Welsh and our Head Girls, Gigi Souyave-Murphy (12W) and Izzy Stephens (12M), led the celebrations with a cake cutting ceremony. We thoroughly enjoyed devouring the blue and white decorated cake, while taking a moment to reflect on the history behind our traditional school colours. Ashna Kanagarajah (12W)

(1998), spoke to us about her time at Girls Grammar and the meaningful lessons she’s learned along the way. ‘It was my time at Girls Grammar that sparked my love of learning’, she remarked, a love that still holds true in her successful career as a Marine Scientist. Her compassionate and vulnerable speech truly inspired us as she spoke about the challenges she has faced as a woman working in a male-dominated field and reminded us to ‘lead with integrity’.

remarkable history of our school, and how it continues to thrive and flourish almost 150 years later. During the Foundation Day address, Grammar Woman, Dr Melissa Cowlishaw

MINDFULNESS M indfulness: the simple practice of bringing an accepting attitude to the present moment. In all stages of our lives, we face adversity, and mindfulness can be used as a tool to relocate our balance. More specifically, mindfulness practices allow us to become more aware of how we react. Over the past few decades, due to its increase in popularity, the practice of mindfulness has woven itself into people’s lives, from athletes in the Olympic stadium, to School students here at Brisbane Girls Grammar School. In the junior Year levels—7, 8, 9, and 10—the .b program was introduced, along with techniques such as palm tracing and counting. These practices are carried into senior Year levels and have proven to be very helpful, especially during times of assessment. Other mindfulness practices are also encouraged, such as origami and yoga. Through these practices, we can recognise the value of being present in the moment. Tung-Hi Ma (11H)

BI-GRAMMAR

T he series of intense and extremely fun competitions between Brisbane Girls Grammar School and Brisbane Grammar School (BGS), known as Bi-Grammar, is all about cultivating Grammar spirit, teamwork, and school pride. Annual Bi-Grammar events have been a huge success in previous years, with the Grammar Schools each fighting for victory in matches of Touch, Netball, and several other activities. On Thursday 16 June, the Year 11 cohorts from BGGS and BGS came together to battle it out in a Bi-Grammar trivia afternoon in the lead-up to their Charity Social. There were 48 teams of eight (four girls and four boys), allocated at random to allow us to make new connections with the boys next door. We were treated to five trivia rounds that tested our general knowledge, or rather ‘general ignorance’ as Mr Fogarty named it, from iconic city skylines to movie scenes with invisible faces! During the intense competition, we harnessed not only our memory of the names of the original Wiggles or the seven dwarves, but the crucial skills of teamwork and friendship-building. Collaborating with the boys to unearth our most abstract trivia knowledge, come up with guessing strategies, negotiate through challenges, have a good laugh at our childhood memories, and celebrate small wins, was a simple yet effective way to strengthen our bonds. It was a truly valuable experience to come together with our Grammar brothers and we are very grateful for this opportunity. Thank you to Mr Fogarty, Ms Stark, and Ms Dabelstein for their amazing efforts to coordinate such an enjoyable event. Grace Paschkewitz (11O) and Jacqueline Trappett (11O)

A fter a two-year hiatus, the most anticipated event in the Year 12 calendar, Bi-Grammar, was finally able to be reintroduced. Bi Grammar is a three-part competition that pits our very own Seniors against their counterparts at Brisbane Grammar School. The three activities chosen by the student-led Committee for 2022 were Touch Football, a Battle of the Bands, and Netball. Even before the competition had formally begun, the spirit and enthusiasm from the girls was already unmatched thanks to our 2022 Bi-Grammar Hype Video. The video, featuring celebrity cameos from Jacob Elordi and Scotty Tweedie, fuelled our team’s desire to perform our best. The competition started in the early weeks of Term 3, where a game of Touch Football was played on the BGS oval. Despite our encouraging posters, bright face paint, and loud wall-cries, unfortunately this time the boys came out as victors. However, our senior musicians brought us back into the competition, winning the Battle of the Bands with their fantastic performance of Blinding Lights . The prolonged standing ovation after their performance was a clear indication of our landslide victory. Term 3 ended with the tie-breaking competition: Netball. Girls Grammar rounded up our most talented players for the all-important match against the Boys Grammar team. Ultimately, the combined advantages of playing on home ground and having a comprehensive knowledge of the rules, led to a sweet victory, with the girls sealing the 2022 Bi-Grammar Title with a 23-13 win. Bi-Grammar was a wonderful opportunity which allowed us to support our Grammar sisters as well as strengthen our relationships with our peers at BGS. We hope this tradition can continue for seniors in the future. Emma Blucher (12W) and Amber Lu (12E)

YEAR 7 PREFECTS P refects can create powerful and enduring bonds with the incoming Year 7 students as they start their BGGS journey. We have the special opportunity to help the Year 7 girls find their feet around the School and settle into the bustling Girls Grammar rhythm. Throughout the year as Prefects, we have had the gift of meeting with Year 7 House Groups twice weekly, supporting and mentoring the younger students, playing games, preparing for upcoming events, and answering any pressing questions they may have. Starting at a new school—and one as large as ours—can be nerve-wracking, so as Year 7 Prefects, we are familiar faces that girls can approach to ask their myriad questions. Whether it is providing study and homework tips, or answering questions about Service or Sport, as Year 7 Prefects we are available for the girls at any time to help out. We know it’s a crucial role as not only are we a friendly face around the grounds, but we also have a thorough understanding of the School and what it’s like to be in Year 7 ourselves, with the mix of emotions girls can sometimes feel throughout their new experiences. This means we can connect with the students on a deeper level and sometimes answer questions girls may not feel comfortable asking their teachers. We work closely with teachers and Heads of House to make sure that all girls feel welcomed and supported. This year, we also had the opportunity to plan a celebration to mark the Year 7’s first 50 Days at Girls Grammar—a fun-filled event where the younger girls and their Year 12 buddies celebrated together with food, music, and games. It was certainly a day to remember. Ella Munro (12E) and Jessica Wells (12E) YEAR 8 PREFECTS U ndertaking the role of Year 8 Prefects has been a delightful and enjoyable experience. Throughout the year, we visited Year 8 Beanland’s House Group every Thursday and planned activities to encourage them to connect as a House. We often brought sweet treats and games like Jenga and cards, which was always a crowd pleaser. Our goal this year was to strengthen the bond and unity between the students, and it was rewarding to see them grow closer over the year. This experience has allowed us to improve our teamwork, communication, and leadership skills. A highlight from the year was when we held a pancake breakfast with the House Group as we got to laugh together while cooking the pancakes. Leia Kirkham (12B) and Elise Truong (12B) YEAR 9 PREFECTS T hroughout the year, we have both enjoyed being Prefects for Year 9 Lilley. The Prefect position aims to develop a relationship between the Year 12 girls and younger House Groups, where the girls can ask for guidance or help throughout the year. We have loved chatting with, and getting to know, the girls. We planned fun activities to break up their busy days and offered support throughout the year. Some activities we have organised include dodgeball, Kahoots, an Easter egg hunt, and cookie decorating to bring the girls closer together. However, we have also had relaxing House Groups where we simply chatted to the girls. Overall, we really wanted to give every girl in the House Group something to look forward to every morning as we know that school life can sometimes be stressful and overwhelming. For ourselves, we have both looked forward to seeing the girls every week, building new friendships with them, and passing on what we have learned from our time at BGGS.
